"And the word of the LORD was precious in those days..."

Our family is currently in 1 Samuel, and there was a passage from
chapter 3 that stood out to me yesterday:

1 Samuel 3:1 NIV
(1) The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In
those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many
visions.

1 Samuel 3:16-17 NIV
(16) but Eli called him and said, "Samuel, my son." Samuel
answered, "Here I am."
(17) "What was it he said to you?" Eli asked. "Do not hide it
from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you
hide from me anything he told you."

Notice here, Eli's attitude toward the word of the Lord. It was
a precious thing to him. Even though God had pronounced judgment
on Eli's family, and Eli knew it, he wanted to know every last
word the Lord had said, so much that he pronounced a curse if
Samuel withheld it from him.

When is the last time you saw someone with that attitude towards
God's word? Do you wait and long to hear from God? Today, we
have the word of God, the Bible, at our disposal. We read it
whenever we want. We can hear it being proclaimed whenever we
want.

But what is our attitude towards the word of God? Do we roll our
eyes at the thought of hearing a sermon or devotional? There are
some in this group who devote themselves to ongoing malicious
attacks against the Bible or anyone who dares to hold faith in it
as the word of God. People are already trying to define the
Bible as hate speech, even in these groups, and it may be a
matter of time before it becomes illegal to mention what the
Bible says, even in your own home.

May we treasure hearing the word of God, and our access to hear
it and proclaim it to others. May we long for every word that
proceeds from the mouth of God (Matt. 4:4).

Have you heard Christ died for our sins, and God raised Him
from the dead? Did you know God saves you from hell and
gives you eternal life through faith in this finished work alone,
not your merits (Jn. 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:1-3; Eph. 2:8-10; 2 Thess.
1:8-9)? This is so man cannot boast, and God alone gets the
glory (Eph. 2:8-9).
